NSW government defends Olympic cost

The New South Wales auditor-general today estimated the net cost to the state government of
hosting the 2000 Olympics at $2.3 billion.

The new figure is an increase of $700 million on government figures.

In the performance audit report, the direct costs of the Games were estimated at $5.9
billion with direct revenues of $3.6 billion, leaving a net cost to the government of $2.3
billion.
